No. 17 Men’s Soccer Drops Road Contest at No. 25 Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 17 ranked Wesleyan men's soccer team fell to No. 25 Coast Guard, 2-0, on Tuesday night in a driving rainstorm down on the coast of Connecticut. Wesleyan (6-2-1) is now winless in their last three games after starting the season 6-0 while the Bears (7-1-2) bounce back with their first win in three games.

Rain was beating down all game long and the winds were blowing off the Thames River, as the two sides played two a scoreless first half with neither side generating much in terms of quality scoring chances.

As play resumed, the defenses continued to dominate as shot attempts were at a premium throughout but the Bears took one of those few chances in the 65th minute. An in-sweeping corner kick from the near side found the head of George Ackling at the near post, beating a lunging Liam Devanny '23 in goal who fighting off multiple players deep in the box as well as the adverse weather conditions.

Just five minutes later, Coast Guard added a second as John DiTommaso set Andrew Ferderer up with a weighted ball, who buried the shot just past Devanny and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 70th minute.

The two sides combined for just eight total shots with only three landing on-goal in the contest. CGA generated a 7-3 edge in corner kicks, with all seven coming in the second half.

Wesleyan needs to regroup for a big NESCAC weekend ahead as the Cardinals travel to face Little Three foe Williams on Saturday before traveling home to face Bates on Sunday.
