MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan football senior defensive tackle
Nick Helbig '23 was honored as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is Helbig's second time winning the weekly award this season, earning his first after posting three sacks in a season-opening over Bates.
Helbig was a menace all day long along the Cardinals' defensive line, as the senior led the team with eight tackles while adding 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in Wesleyan's 35-21 Homecoming win over Williams on Saturday, helping secure the 2022 Little Three Championship. Helbig now has four games this season with at least 1.5 sacks as he ranks second in the NESCAC in both TFL (11.5) and sacks (8.0) in 2022. His forced fumble in the win over the Ephs also marked his fifth of the season, easily the highest in the NESCAC as the next-closest player has two forced fumbles.
Wesleyan heads into their 2022 season finale on Saturday as the Cardinals travel to in-state rival Trinity for a Noon start. Wesleyan (6-2) looks to spoil the Bantams' undefeated season as Trinity comes in with an unblemished 8-0 record.
