Baseball Drops Season Opener to Chapman, 17-8

TUCSON, AZ- Baseball drops their season opener Friday afternoon to Chapman 17-8. This was the first of 10 games that the team will play in Arizona before returning home to Middletown, CT on March 25th. Wesleyan drops their opener going to 0-1, while Chapman competed in their 11th game of the year to improve to 7-4. Chapman got going early scoring the game's first nine runs within the first three innings before the Wesleyan offense got going later in the game. Chapman went for 17 runs on 15 hits, including a 2-run home run in the 8th inning. Wesleyan put together eight runs on eight hits in their first game of the season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS (17-8 L)
  • Chapman jumped on Wesleyan early, scoring three runs in the first inning. A Littwin triple drove home drove home Kondo. They then scored on a sacrifice fly and a walk to extend the first-inning lead to three
  • They added six more runs over the next two innings to stretch the lead out to nine going into the bottom of the third. Mieliwock drove in two with a double to start the 2nd, followed by doubles by Littwin and Montgomer that each drove in a run
  • Wesleyan got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd. Cole Torino '24 began the inning getting on base with a walk. He then stole 2nd , and advanced to 3rd on an error by the pitcher with one out in the inning. Ryan Molinari '22 was then able to get Torino home with a squeeze play to get Wesleyan their first run
  • After Chapman scored a run in the top of the 4th, Wesleyan responded with a run of their own. Adam Geibel '22 led off the inning with a single, and eventually was driven in by Matt Halas '24 which made the game 10-2
  • Wesleyan added three more runs in the 5th. Geibel's sacrifice fly drove in the Cardinals 3rd run of the game. Wes Fritch '22 and Halas drove in one more each with singles, cutting the deficit to only five
  • That would be the closest the Cardinals got the rest of the way. Chapman added three more runs in the 6th. Jack Scher '22 answered with a two run double in the 7th, but Chapman responded with three more runs to end the game to win 17-8
 
NOTES
  • Matt Halas (3/4, 2 RBIs) drove in the first two runs of his career to go along with a career high three hits
  • Ryan Molinari (2/3, 1 RBI) was the other Cardinal with a multi-hit game, tying his career high with two hits
  • Jack Scher (1/3, 2 RBIs) was the only Cardinal with a extra base hit. He put up career highs in both hits and RBIs
  • Mario Lee '25 pitched a scoreless inning in his first appearance in a Cardinals uniform. Ian Appleby '24 also pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings
