Softball Goes 1-1 on the Day, Defeating Wisconsin-Platteville Before Falling to SUNY Cortland

CLERMONT, FL- Softball goes 1-1 on the day, defeating Wisconsin-Platteville in five innings before falling to SUNY Cortland 6-2. Wesleyan's Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 dominated the first matchup of the day a complete game shutout, to go along with her home run. The Cardinals offense went for eight runs in total, finishing the shortened game with 12 hits. In the next one, Wesleyan fell behind quick giving up five runs in the 1st inning. Wesleyan couldn't quite recover, losing 6-2. Wesleyan is now 3-2 on the year moving into Tuesday's two games. SUNY Cortland picked up a win to improve to 1-3, while Wisconsin-Platteville falls to 5-5.
 
HIGHLIGHTS (vs. Wisconsin-Platteville | W, 8-0)
  • Secaira-Cotto started off her impressive day early, homering in the 1st to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead
  • Wesleyan piled it on in the 2nd, driving in five more runs on five hits. It started with Bella Tassone '24 hitting a single through the left side and stealing both 2nd and 3rd to set up the Cardinals with a runner on third with nobody out. Courtney Collins-Pisano '22 followed it up with a suicide squeeze one batter later to extend the lead to four
  • Hannah Docktor '24 drove in two more with a single to left field and Wesleyan really started to open it up. Darlene De La Cruz '25 hit a 2-run single of her own three batters later and Wesleyan went into the bottom of the 2nd up 8-0
  • The score would remain at 8-0 for the remainder of the game, behind a stellar pitching performance by Secaira-Cotto. She pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five while only allowing three hits. Wisconsin-Platteville's pitching also finished strong, holding Wesleyan scoreless through the final three innings while allowing only three hits  
NOTES:
  • Secaira-Cotto picked up her first win of the season to go to 1-1. She pitched five scoreless innings, striking out five and only allowing three total hits. She also hit the first home run of her career.
  • Docktor (3-for-4) tied a career-high in both hits (3) and RBI (2)
  • De La Cruz drove in two more runs today, totaling five in five games 
HIGHLIGHTS (vs. SUNY Cortland | L, 6-2)
  • Tori Reich singled home Elena Ornstein to start the scoring in the top of the 1st for SUNY Cortland. After a walk and a hit by pitch the Red Dragons had the bases loaded with only one out. Revi Brown '23 made the play to home on a ground ball to keep the deficit at one. Now with two outs, the Red Dragons' Lizzy Byers launched a grand slam over the left field fence to give them a five-run first inning lead
  • Brown would settle down, not allowing a hit for the next two innings to keep the game in reach. Wesleyan's offense responded in the bottom of the 3rd, started by a Sophia Sciarappa '22 double that drove home the Cardinals first run of the contest. Brown then came up two batters later and drove Sciarappa home on a single through the left side to make the score 5-2
  • Both pitchers settled in after that, only allowing one combined run over the final four innings. The Red Dragons added that insurance run in the top of the 5th on a Halle Wright single to right field. SUNY Cortland pitching held the Cardinals to three hits over those final four innings to hold onto a 6-2 victory
NOTES:
  • Sophia Sciarappa reached base on all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks
  • Kendall Mancuso '22 joined her with two hits, her 2nd two-hit performance of the season
