Softball Takes Both Games in Doubleheader Against Curry

Wesleyan wins their home opener

MIDDLETOWN, CT- Softball takes both games in doubleheader against Curry Saturday morning and early afternoon. Wesleyan won the first matchup behind stellar pitching from Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 who held Curry scoreless in their 7-0 victory. The 2nd matchup appeared to be more competitive, with Curry taking an early 3-1 lead. However, Wesleyan got the bats going after that, taking care of the Colonels in 5 innings 12-4. Wesleyan wins back-to-back games to return to .500 on the season at 6-6. Curry drops both games and falls to 4-9 in 2022.

HIGHLIGHTS (GAME 1: 7-0)
  • The Cardinals offense started out hot in the morning contest, scoring six runs in their half of the 1st. Sophia Sciarappa '22 drove in the first run of the game, driving in Courtney Collins-Pisano '22 who singled to begin the game. Krissy Gately '24 drove in two more with double to left center. Alexis Campbell '22 drove in the 6th run of the inning on a double over the right fielder's head
  • Both pitchers were excellent over the next two innings, allowing no runs and keeping the game at 6-0. The Cardinals' offense struck again in the bottom half of the 4th when Kendall Mancuso '22 hit a single through the left side that drove in Sciarappa who singled to begin the inning
  • The score would hold at 7-0 the rest of the way. Curry threatened with two runners on in the 7th, but could push one across
NOTES: HIGHLIGHTS (Game 2: 12-4)
  • Wesleyan got on the board early again in the 2nd game, scoring to give them a 1-0 lead. Gately singled to right field, scoring Collins-Pisano who led off the game by getting on via getting hit with a pitch. Curry's offense responded in the next half inning with three runs to give them a 3-1 advantage
  • The lead didn't last very long, with the Cardinals scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the 2nd. Sciarappa drove in two with a single, which was followed by another via an error by the Curry shortstop. Secaira-Cotto came up next, singling to centerfield but Sciarappa tried to score and got thrown out to end the inning
  • Wesleyan broke the game open in the 4th, scoring five runs on six hits to give them a seven run lead. Curry stopped the bleeding before Wesleyan really extended the lead, forcing Gately to pop up with the bases loaded to end the inning
  • Darlene De La Cruz '25 "walked it off" in the 5th, singling home Secaira-Cotto to give Wesleyan a eight-run lead in the bottom of the 5th, ending the game
NOTES: UP NEXT:
Wesleyan returns to action next weekend against Hamilton in their first NESCAC games of the season. They will compete against the Colonels Friday the 1st, followed by a doubleheader on the 2nd, all at home.
