CLINTON,N.Y. - The No. 26 nationally-ranked Wesleyan men's tennis team defeated Hamilton, 5-2, to start NESCAC play 2-0. The Cardinals had three matches over spring break against nationally ranked teams, winning one of three. They then came back from break and went 1-1 with a win over NESCAC foe Trinity then falling to No.16 Denison. Wesleyan moves to 3-3 (2-0 NESCAC) with the win, while Hamilton drops to 4-2 (0-1 NESCAC).
In doubles play, Wesleyan performed well.
Peter Anker '22 and
Ben Mitchell '24 defeated Connor Griff and Matt Bartok 8-6 at #1.
Zach Lieb '22 and
Harry Portnoy '24 won at #2 over Joe Reiner and Eric Stein 8-7.
Max Lustgarten '25 and
Clay Gaieski '23 finished at #3 with a 8-7 victory over Gianni Esposito and Nicolas Gritz.
After three hard fought victories in doubles play, they moved into singles play. In singles Wesleyan split, winning two and losing two. Gritz defeated Portnoy 7-6, 6-4 in #4, while Esposito defeated
Max Lee '22 7-6, 6-2. Mitchell defeated Reiner at #3, and Lustgarten defeated Ethan Chin 6-1, 6-3 at #6.
Wesleyan will return to action tomorrow the 27
th when they travel to play Amherst in another NESCAC matchup.
