Baseball Falls to Nichols, 9-4, in Final Game Before NESCAC Play

 
MIDDLETOWN, CT- Baseball falls to Nichols 9-4 Thursday night at Dresser Diamond. This was the last game before the Cardinals head into NESCAC conference play which begins with three games this weekend against Amherst. Nichols got off to a hot start in this one, taking a 7-0 lead just an inning and a half into the game. Wesleyan fought back over the next eight innings, however they were not able to complete the comeback falling to the Bison 9-4. Wesleyan drops their 2nd straight to go back to .500 at 7-7. Nichols improves to 6-10 with the win over the Cardinals.
 
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Nichols jumped on Wesleyan pitching early, scoring four runs on two hits and an error in the first inning. Johnny Knox blasted the first of two home runs he hit on the afternoon to bring across the 4th run of the inning
  • The Bison's bats continued to stay hot in the 2nd, driving in three more runs to extend their lead to seven. Nichols capitalized on two Wesleyan errors to go along with two hits in the inning to give them their largest lead of the game
  • Wesleyan responded in the bottom half of the 2nd. Matt Halas '24 led off the inning with an infield single, followed by a Ryan Molinari '22 single up the middle. After a passed ball moved the runners up, Kyle Sylvester '22 drove in Halas on a sacrifice fly. Molinari later scored as well on a Eddie Zanor '23 single to left field making the game 7-2 going into the 3rd
  • The Bison added two more runs over the next two innings to extend their lead to 9-2 going into the bottom of the 4th. Wesleyan was able to muster two more runs the rest of the way. The first coming in the 5th on a Luke LaSaracina '25 homerun to center field. Then in the 7th, Cole Torino '24 was able to cross home on a wild pitch for Wesleyan's 4th and final run
 
NOTES:
  • Luke LaSaracina (2-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI) hits his 2nd home run of the season (leads team)
  • Matt Halas (2-for-4, 1 run) had his 6th multi-hit game of the year
  • Wesleyan used nine pitchers
  • The Cardinals outhit the Bison 9-8
 
UP NEXT:
Wesleyan returns to action this weekend. They travel to play Amherst tomorrow April 1st, followed by a double header back home against the Mammoths on the 2nd.
