Men’s Tennis Takes Down No. 24 Colby, 6-3

WATERVILLE, Me. – The Wesleyan men's tennis team earned a key road win on Sunday, defeating No. 24 nationally ranked Colby by a score of 6-3 from the Alfond-Whales Tennis Courts. Wesleyan (6-8, 4-5 NESCAC) earned their second win over a nationally ranked foe in the past three matches, while the Mules (8-6, 4-4 NESCAC) lose for the third time in four matches.
 
Wesleyan started the match with two doubles victories as Peter Anker '22 and Ben Mitchell '24 combined for an 8-6 win at #1 over Joey Barrett and Jake Cohen. Zach Lieb '22 and Harry Portnoy '24 gave Wesleyan a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, as the Cardinal duo defeated Max Schuermann and Sam Henry 8-6 at #2.
 
In singles play, Mitchell picked up his second victory of the day and fourth of the weekend as he defeated Henry 6-1, 7-6 at #3. Max Lustgarten '25 followed with a win at #5 over James Bogdanovic 6-4, 6-4 and Anker put the match away with a 6-2, 7-5 win at #1 as he defeated Barrett to move to 11-3 in dual matches this season at #1.
 
Colby managed their first of two singles win at #4 as Portnoy won the opening set over Schuermann 6-4 only to see the Mule bounce back with 6-2, 6-3 wins in the second and third set. Lieb followed the first Cardinal defeat with a win at #2 over Cohen as Lieb won the opening set 6-2 before Cohen bounced back with a 6-2 second set win. In the third set super tiebreak, it was Lieb who persevered with a 10-6 win.
 
Wesleyan is back in action at home on Saturday, April 30 at 10 AM with a Senior Day match against Conn. College.
