Early Goal Drives Men's Soccer Past Bates

LEWISTON, Me. – Leading the Wesleyan men's soccer team with the game-winning goal and the first of his career, Joshwin Jennings '27 was the deciding factor in a 1-0 NESCAC triumph over Bates College on Sunday afternoon from Russell Street Field.

The Cardinals (4-3-4 overall, 1-2-4 NESCAC) set the tone of the match during the first 20 minutes of action, recording three shots and two corner kicks before a foul on Bobcats (2-7-1 overall, 0-7 NESCAC) led to an awarded free kick. Will Geballe '26 kickstarted the play, taking the kick at the left line inside the Bobcats zone. Geballe's shot initially deflected towards the goal but was kept out by a defender before Jennings' right foot found the rebounded ball and snapped it into the bottom right corner for the 1-0 tally at 21:47.

Outshooting the Bobcats 11-7 overall, the offense produced six shots in the second half. Lucas Ruehlemann '25 rallied the offensive effort with two attempts. The defense held the Bobcats to only one shot on goal as Geballe, Evan O'Brien '24, and Chris Porte '25 stonewalled for all 90 minutes of action.

Mathis Blanc '26 made one save on seven shots faced in goal for the Cardinals, marking his fourth shutout of the season. Bobcats goalkeeper Trevor Hammond recorded zero saves.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14, when they head to Williams College for a 1 p.m. NESCAC kickoff.
