Baseball Falls to Macalester, 10-7

TUCSON, AZ. – The Wesleyan baseball team competed once again in Arizona Thursday, falling to Macalester by a score of 10-7 after a rain delay. The Scots got off to a fast start in this one, scoring six runs in the second inning to take an early commanding lead. Wesleyan responded with four in the 4th to cut the deficit to just two, but Macalester continued to pile up runs extending their advantage to 10-4 heading into the final frame. The Cardinals added three in the 9th, however their comeback effort came up short and the Scots came away with the 10-7 victory. With the win, the Scots get back to .500 at 4-4. With the loss, the Cards drop back to .500 themselves at 3-3.

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The two teams nearly had identical first innings, each finishing with one hit, no runs, and two runners left on base. Moving into the 2nd inning, the Scots got the bats going in a big way. They managed five hits, including two extra base hits, on way to a six-run top of the second. The big hit of the inning came from Hayes Waddle who hit a three-run triple to right field that broke the game open at 5-0
  • Both teams threatened to score in the 3rd inning, but were unable to push a run across. Macalester loaded the bases on a hit and a pair of walks but a with two outs, Cards pitching forced a groundout. The Cards showed promise with two runners on with only one out, but were also unable to get a key hit with a runner in scoring position.
  • Wesleyan was able to push their first runs across in the bottom of the 4th. Christian Boudreau '25 drove in the first run with a one-out single to right field. That was followed with a Matt Halas '24 base knock and Wesleyan had trimmed the deficit to four. The last big hit of the inning came from Kyle Sylvester '22, who brought home two with a single and the score was 6-4 going into the 5th
  • Macalester responded in the top half of the 5th with two runs of their own on three hits to up their advantage to 8-4. After some solid pitching, the game moved into the 7th with the score still at 8-4, until Waddle came through with a two-out two-run base hit and the Scots lead was back up to six.
  • Macalester pitching held strong moving into the final inning to keep their advantage at six, but the Cardinals had one more run in them in the final frame. After a leadoff walk by Sylvester, the next two Cardinals were retired, bringing them to their final out. A pair of walks loaded the bases, before a balk pushed across the Cards 5th run to make it 10-5. Ernie Little '26 stepped up and made things real interesting by driving home two more with a single to center field, but the Scots were able to retire the next Cardinal to come away with the 10-7 victory
