Softball Swept by Trinity

Cardinals defeated 12-3 in game one, 5-4 in game two

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan softball team was swept by the Trinity Bantams Sunday afternoon. The Bantams defeated the Cardinals in five innings in the first matchup of the day, exploding for 12 runs all in the last three innings of play, to come away with the 12-3 victory. In game two it was the middle innings where each teams' offenses came alive, as all nine total runs were scored from the 3-5th innings of play. The lead went back and forth during those innings with three lead changes and two ties, eventually ending with the Bantams adding a final run in the bottom of the 5th to secure the 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. Trinity improves to 5-7 (2-0 NESCAC) while the Cardinals fall to 8-12 (0-4 NESCAC).

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (12-3 Loss)
  • Both pitchers breezed through the opening two innings of play with Brooklin Williams '23 and Tiffany Stowers combining to only allow one single hit through the first 12 outs of the game. Then after another quick half-inning in the top of the 3rd, the Bantams bats got going in a big way. Taylor Mikolajczak opened with a home run to center field to get Trinity on the board. They would add four more runs on four more hits to open the lead up to 5-0 heading into the 4th
  • The Cardinals fought back in the 4th, with Molly Lennon '26 and Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 delivering singles to open the inning. Lennon would score on a Krissy Gately '24 RBI-groundout, but they would be stopped there. Trinity came back to the plate in the bottom half and put together three more runs on two doubles and a Wesleyan fielding error to extend the lead back out to 8-1
  • The Cardinals showed fight, driving home two more in the 5th to trim into the lead. Sydney Walls '26 singled home one on a RBI-single to center and Wesleyan had it back to 8-3. Trinity would end up putting the game away in the next half inning, as after a hit by pitch, single, and walk, Stowers sent a ball over the right field fence for a walk-off mercy-rule grand slam to give the Bantams a 12-3 victory in five innings

NOTES:
  • Trinity outhit the Cardinals 12-5, with six extra base hits
  • Five different Cardinals got a hit

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (5-4 Loss)
  • Both pitchers shined in the first two innings again in game two, holding the teams to a combined two hits through the first two innings of play. Wesleyan was then able to get on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning. After two outs to open the half-inning, Hannah Docktor '24 and Walls hit back-to-back singles. Docktor scored on the ensuing at-bat off a Trinity fielding error to take the lead at 1-0. The Bantams came right back and scored in the bottom half on two extra base hits and the game went into the 4th tied at one
  • Cards looked poised to add another run in the 4th after consecutive leadoff hits by Gately and Darlene De La Cruz '25 had two on with nobody out. Wesleyan was only able to push one across however, with Alexis Campbell '22 driving Gately in on a RBI-groundout to retake the lead at 2-1. The Bantams came back once again in the bottom half, this time with three runs on three hits and a Wesleyan error to go up 4-2 heading into the 5th
  • Each team always seemed to have the answer and that was the case again in the 5th. Wesleyan responded with two of their own to even the game. Cat Palmer '26 delivered an RBI-single to the left side, followed by a sacrifice fly by Secaira-Cotto and the game was once again even at four. Trinity had the final say in the bottom of the 5th, bringing across what would end up being the deciding run on an RBI-double by Kennedy Rogers. Both relief pitchers closed the final two innings strong and Trinity came away with a 5-4 win
