Softball Bested by No. 9 Tufts in Both Games of Double-Header

Cardinals fell 10-1 in game one, 11-0 in game two

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan softball team was bested in both games of Saturday's double-header against No. 9 Tufts. The Cardinals took an early lead in game one, scoring in the opening frame, but the Jumbos controlled the game the rest of the way. They scored six in the 3rd and four in the 4th to eventually take the victory in five innings, 10-1. In game two, Tufts jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Jumbos would bring across five runs in the 2nd and six in the 3rd to complete the sweep in five innings, 11-0. Tufts continues their strong run, improving to 29-2 (12-0 NESCAC). Wesleyan drops to 11-17 (1-9 NESCAC).
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (10-1 LOSS)
  • The Cardinals got on the board in the opening inning, pushing one across on two hits. After a groundout to open the game, Alexis Campbell '22 singled down the left field line. Campbell's single was eventually followed by another base hit by Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25. A fielding error led to Campbell scoring and Wesleyan held a 1-0 lead. Kelly Baker '26 got the start and put the Jumbos down in the opening frame to hang on to their lead
  • Baker rebounded in the 2nd after giving up a leadoff double to shut the Tufts offense down, but the Jumbos bounced back in a big way in the 3rd inning. They had their first six batters reach base, finishing the inning with six runs on six hits to really take control of the game at 6-1. The Jumbos continued to stay hot in the 4th, pouring in four more runs on three hits and three Wesleyan fielding errors to reach what ended up being the final score at 10-1
  • The Cardinals had one more chance to extend the game in the top of the 5th. Revi Brown '23 opened by reaching on an error, followed by a fielder's choice. After a groundout, Hannah Docktor '24 kept the game alive with a single, but the threat was ended with a strikeout and Tufts took game one 10-1
 
NOTES:
  • The Cardinals were outhit 11-4
  • Docktor (1-for-3) has recorded a hit in eight of her last nine contests
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (11-0 LOSS)
  • After a quiet first inning and a half to open game two, the Jumbos bats got going in the 2nd. They put together five runs on five hits, including a triple and home run that broke the scoreless tie and gave them a comfortable 5-0 lead heading into the 3rd
  • Tufts picked up where they left off in the 4th, continuing the hot stretch with six more runs on six hits. Two of those six hits were 2-run doubles that extended the Jumbos advantage to 11-0. Brown was able to come into the circle in the 4th and hold Tufts without a run, but the Cards went down in order in the 5th and the game came to an end at 11-0
 
NOTES:
  • The Cardinals were outhit 14-0, their first time being no hit this season
  • Brown (1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER) came in relief in the 4th and pitched a scoreless inning

The Wesleyan softball team will compete in a mid-week home NESCAC double-header against Amherst on Wednesday April 26th. The games will start at 3 and 5 pm.
