HARTFORD, CT. – The Wesleyan baseball team traveled to face NESCAC opponent Trinity for a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals fell to the Bantams 7-3 in the weekday battle, in their first matchup in Hartford since the 2018 season. The game went into the 4
th tied at one apiece, before four unanswered runs over the next four innings to take a comfortable 5-1 lead with only two innings to go. Wesleyan fought back with a run in the 8
th and 9
th innings, but it wasn't enough and the Cardinals fell by four runs. With the win the Bantams improve to 21-12. Wesleyan drops to 15-17 with the loss.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- After Wesleyan went down in order to open the game, Trinity was able to get one across. They used three walks and some stolen bases to push the first run of the game across home without a single hit. Wesleyan came back with the equalizer in the top of the 3rd. James Marsden '26 came through with a base hit towards first base that was able to score Evan Diaz '25, tying the game at one
- The Bantams then reeled off four unanswered runs over the next four innings to stretch their lead out to 5-1. They got one in the 4th off two hits, two in the 6th off two hits, and one more in the 7th
- Wesleyan got one back in the 8th on a balk that scored Kyle Sylvester '22 to make it 5-2, but the Bantams quickly answered with two of their own in the bottom half to extend their lead to 7-2 going into the final frame. Wesleyan had one more chance in the 9th, but could only come up with one. Down to their final out, Ethan Diaz '25 singled home Connor Sullivan '26, however he was thrown out trying to advance to 2nd and the game ended 7-3
NOTES:
- Wesleyan used five pitchers on the afternoon. Mario Lee '25 (1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 4 BB) and Ian Appleby '24 (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 Ks) combined for three productive innings of work to open the game
- Sullivan (2-for-4, R) and Cole Tornio '24 (2-for-3, R) were the two Cards with multiple hits on the afternoon
- Wesleyan was outhit 7-6 by the Bantams
