WATERVILLE, ME. – The Wesleyan softball team concluded their season Sunday afternoon, competing in a double-header on the road against the Mules of Colby. Game one was a pitching duel between
Kelly Baker '26 and KC DeSarno. Colby was able to get on the board in the 3
rd with a two-run home run for the only score from either team in the contest. In game two, Wesleyan was able to take and hold onto a 2-1 lead going into the 5
th. The Mules tied it in the 5
th before exploding for five-runs in the bottom half of the 6th to take control of the game, ultimately winning 7-2. Colby finishes the regular season 23-13 (12-4 NESCAC), while the Cardinals wrap up 2023 13-25 (1-17 NESCAC).
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (2-0 LOSS)
- Despite the low scoring affair, both teams had a few innings where they were threatening. Colby opened their half of the 1st inning with two runners on, but were unable to push one across. Wesleyan came back in the top of the 2nd with singles from Krissy Gately '25 and Sydney Walls '26, but could not get one across either
- The Mules found their offense in the 3rd, opening the inning with a base hit. The single would eventually be followed by a Logan Luebbe home run that put Colby up 2-0. They would look to add more with a walk and a single, but Baker was able to get out of trouble to hold the deficit at 2-0
- Wesleyan's best chance to score the rest of the way came in the top of the 5th. Gately got it started with a double, and after a groundout Revi Brown '23 and Ciara Castillo '23 reached via a hit by pitch and fielder's choice to bring up Hannah Docktor '24 with the bases loaded. The Mules pitching was able to force a groundout and move to the 6th. Wesleyan went down in order in the 6th, but Walls came through with a two-out single in the 7th to keep them alive. Brown came up representing the tying run, but was forced into a groundout and the game ended 2-0
NOTES:
- Baker (6 IP, 7 H, 2 Er, 2 BB, 4 K's) was impressive in the circle for the Cards
- Gately (2-for-3, 2B) and Walls (2-for-3) combined for four of Wesleyan's five hits
- Wesleyan was outhit by the Mules 7-5
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (7-2 LOSS)
- Wesleyan tried to strike first in game number two, as Docktor attempted to steal home after leading the game off with a walk, but was thrown out. Colby came back in their half of the inning with the first run of the ballgame on an RBI-single and led 1-0. The Cardinals then scored their first two runs of the double-header in the top of the 2nd, on a two-run single up the middle by Castillo and Wes led 2-1
- Both pitchers got settled in the middle innings with Brown and Sam Ahlholm finding their footing for two scoreless innings of action to bring us to the bottom of the 5th. There, the Mules were able to string together two two-out doubles to even the score at 2-2 going into the 6th
- Colby fed off that momentum to put together a five-run bottom of the 6th to break that game open at 7-2. They used five hits, including a base-clearing triple to take their 2nd lead of the game. Wesleyan had one more chance in the top of the 7th, but went down in order to end the game
NOTES:
- Brown (5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, BB) put together a quality start
- Walls (2-for-3, R) and Kat Palmer '26 (2-for-2, R, BB) were the two Cards with multi-hit games. Walls finishes the double-header 4-for-6 with a run
- Castillo (1-for-3) finished with a season-high two RBIs
- Wesleyan was outhit by the Mules 11-6
