No. 20 Volleyball Cruises Past Baruch in Home Opener

18 Cardinals record a point in a dominating sweep

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A devastating all-around performance from the No. 20 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team carried the Cardinals to a convincing 3-0 sweep (25-9, 25-18, 25-9) of Baruch on Friday night from Silloway Gymnasium. Wesleyan improves to 2-0 on the season while the Bearcats drop to 1-1.
 
All 19 Cardinals saw the court in the win while 18 recorded at least half a point. Wesleyan totaled 40 kills on 83 attempts, hitting .386 for the match, while adding seven blocks, and seven service aces.
 
Sophia Lindus '26 went for double-digit kills for the second straight match to open the season, as the sophomore standout finished with 11 on just 16 attempts for a .625 attack percentage to go along with seven digs. Bella Ahearn '23 totaled six kills on 11 attempts (.455 attack percentage) and Fiona LaCamera '27 was a perfect 5-for-5 on her attempts.
 
Three setters all mixed in throughout the night with Ali Landa '26 totaling 11 assists with four digs and two aces. Maya Lopansri '25 went for eight assists and two service aces while Paulina Marino-Bindi '27 added 11 assists with two digs, and one kill in one set of action.
 
Bianca Ortiz '24 led the team with 15 digs while Kiana Yuhl '25 added five digs and one ace in two sets played.
 
The Cardinals played a clean first set, with 10 kills and no attack errors in 24 attempts. After trailing 4-3 in the early going, Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run all off the serve of Lopansri who dished out four assists and had an ace in the scoring run. After the Bearcats responded with three straight points, Wesleyan went on a 5-0 run which extended across the rest of the opening set as the Cardinals scored 15 of the final 17 points to take a 25-9 win.
 
The second set saw Baruch hang in, overcoming a 4-0 scoring run from the Cardinals that made it 13-8, lowering the deficit to three points on several occasions midway through the set. It was 17-14 Wesleyan before the set was put away on a late serving run from Landa as four unanswered points gave the Cardinals a 23-15 lead, before ultimately closing out a 25-18 win.
 
Five different Cardinals accounted for at least two kills in the fifth set as Wesleyan forced Baruch into 10 attack errors compared to just five kills for a -.179 attack percentage in a 25-9 match-clinching set win. Wesleyan scored the first six points of the set before going up 18-6 following four unanswered points. The two sides traded points before Wesleyan finished the match on a 7-1 run.
 
Wesleyan is 39-6 in matches played at home since the start of the 2018 season. This was the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
 
The Cardinals head to Johnson & Wales on Saturday for two matches, starting with a 2 PM neutral site showdown against Emerson followed by a 4 PM match against the host.
