MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Stepping onto the turf for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Smith Field, the Wesleyan men's soccer team showed out with an early lead before coming away with a 3-1 win over Western Connecticut State University in non-conference action.
Aiden Londergan '27 didn't wait long to put an early tally on the board for the Cardinals (5-2-2 overall 2-2-1 NESCAC), scoring with just over a minute of game time on the clock. While the Cardinals charged the field,
Mateo Neighbors '25 transported the ball down the far line and into the corner, finding Londergan at the top of the box for a center shot on goal. The Cardinals would hold the one-goal lead over the Wolves (6-3-2 overall) heading into the second half.
The second goal of the game for the Cardinals came at 69:28 as Zach Burd '25 readied a throw in from the corner. With the Cardinals closing in at the goal,
Josh LaCorte '26 jumped on Burd's throw, the ball grazing his head and sailing into the right corner. The final goal came at 80:16 with the Cardinals once again rushing the Wolves' zone. Dancing the ball in from out beyond the midfield,
Sam Wheeler '27 settled into the right corner before making the fast pass to Truesdale inside the box. Truesdale's slide found the back of the net.
With less than 12 seconds remaining in regulation, the Cardinals ended their hopes of a shutout as they gave the Wolves an own goal tally.
Mathis Blanc '26 made four saves in goal for the Cardinals. At the other end of the field, Zachary Benson, Matthew Silva, and Michael Arcuri, combined for two saves for the Wolves.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to No. 15 Amherst for a 2:30 p.m. NESCAC kickoff.
