SOUTH BURLINGTON, VT. – Suffering their first shutout of the season, the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team fell in non-conference action on Friday night to Saint Michaels College, 3-0, from Saint Michaels' Cairns Arena.
While the final tally may say otherwise, the meeting between the Cardinals and the Purple Knights was far more evenly matched on the stat sheet. The Cardinals were barely outshot by the Knights, edged out by a 31-29 differential as the attack was led by
Hayden Hanes '27 and
Connor Sutherland '27. Despite both teams being held scoreless through the final 20 minutes of regulation time, the Cardinals held possession in the second with 14 shots on Evan Plunkett.
The opening goal went to the Knights with only three minutes elapsed on the clock from the opening faceoff. Jack Tuite earning the goal. With the Cardinals called for cross checking at the end of the first, the Knights struck again while on the power play as Hans Forselius managed the puck behind
Ethan Fehrenbaker '28. Kyle Lee scored the final goal of the game for the Knights at the final five-minute mark of regulation at even strength.
From the faceoff circle, the Cardinals and the Knights drew even with 29 wins apiece. Fehrenbaker in goal finished the night with 28 saves for the Cardinals. Plunkett takes the shutout win for the Knights having made 29 saves.
The Cardinals return to action in the new year when they host Salve Regina on Friday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.
