MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's ice hockey team played host to No. 15 Nazareth University on Saturday afternoon, falling in non-conference action 3-0 heading into the holiday break from Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
Facing the No. 15 team in the country at home, the Cardinals were unable to generate goals on Golden Flyers goaltender McKinley Hoff, though not for a lack of effort. The Cardinals were barely held off in shot differential with a 24-20 margin. The Flyers held an edge through the first 40 minutes of action, but the Cardinals brought the heat in the final period as they put up 12 shots on Hoff.
Sami Smith '27 waved off 21 of the Flyers' scoring attempts while in goal for the Cardinals. Smith helped the Cardinals kill two of the three Flyers power plays, stopping three of the four combined shots. Following the third man advantage for the Flyers, Smith stopped four in a row with the Flyers encroaching the goal.
The Flyers opened the scoring with a first period power-goal by Ella Cedrone as the Cardinals were called for slashing. Early in the second period the Flyers scored their second of the game at even strength, Sophia Pittis earning the tally. The final Flyers goal of the afternoon came just after the halfway point of the third period as Amy Laskowski put a puck behind Smith.
The Cardinals return to action in 2025 when they host UMass Boston on Friday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m.
