Comeback Bid Falls Short in Baseball’s 12-9 Defeat to Union

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Trailing 12-4 heading into the bottom of the 8th, the Wesleyan baseball team made a rally bid scoring five runs and having the potential game-tying run on-deck, but the comeback came up just short in a 12-9 loss to Union (NY) on Tuesday night from Dresser Diamond. The Cardinals (20-7) see their four-game win streak come to an end while the Garnet Chargers (22-6) have won nine straight.

In a matchup between a pair of 20-win teams, both offenses show up in a big way as the two sides combined for 21 runs on 33 hits in the nine-inning affair.

Wesleyan's starting pitcher Lucca Frattone '27 managed to escape the 1st inning with no runs allowed after seeing Union put runners on second and third with no outs. A fielder's choice at home and a groundout to the catcher were followed by a walk to load the bases, but Frattone induced another fielder's choice at third to end the inning.

The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the 1st as Ernie Little '26 and Cole Torino '24 were on third and second, respectively, before both came around to score on a Jack Carpenter '25 two-run single to left.

Over the ensuing six innings, Union took complete control, scoring at least one run in all six innings and at least two runs in five of those six innings. The Garnet Chargers outscored the Cardinals 12-2 in that span to take a 12-4 lead after seven full innings of play.

Wesleyan plated runs in the 4th on a Matt Halas '24 RBI bunt single back to the mound with two outs and Halas came through again in the 6th with an RBI single to right that scored James Marsden '26 from second.

Trailing by eight heading into the bottom of the 8th, the Cardinals pulled two runs back as Luke LaSaracina '25 smacked a two-run homer out to the deepest part of the ballpark, making it 12-6 Union.

After Carpenter worked another scoreless inning in relief in the top of the 9th, Wesleyan saw the first three batters all reach base as it was suddenly 12-7 Union with runners on third and first with no one out. A wild pitch scored another run and Marsden kept the game alive with an RBI single through the right side to make it 12-9 Garnet Chargers, but it wasn't enough as a LaSaracina fly out to center sealed the Union win.

Halas, Marsden, and Little each finished with three hits to lead the Cardinal offense. Halas went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and a hit-by-pitch as he reached base safely in all four plate appearances. Marsden went 3-for-5 with two doubles, 1 RBI, and two runs scored. Little finished 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. The home run for LaSaracina is his fourth of the season and ninth of his career.

Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday with a 4 PM start at WestConn. The Cardinals are 10-3-1 all-time against the Wolves.
