Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale at Nichols, 7-3

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wesleyan baseball team suffered a 7-3 defeat at Nichols on Wednesday night in the final game of the regular season for the Cardinals. Wesleyan (21-11) has lost four straight while the Bison (29-9) have won eight straight and are 16-3 at home this season.

Nichols jumped out to a sizable lead, scoring three runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings to lead 6-0 after two innings. The Cardinals loaded the bases with two out in the 3rd but couldn't push any runs across as Jaden Mwangi got a strikeout to escape without damage.

Wesleyan put together a string of hits, all with two outs, in the 4th inning as Jake Acker '27 singled to center, followed by a bunt single from Matt Halas '24. Christian Boudreau '25 drove in the first run of the game for the Cardinals on an RBI single through the right side. Ernie Little '26 kept the inning alive with a bunt single, the fourth straight batter to single, but the inning again ended with the bases loaded on a Cole Torino '24 groundout.

The Cardinals scored another run in the 5th, but Wesleyan had the bases loaded with no outs and only managed one run as three straight outs finished the inning with Nichols leading 6-2.

The two sides traded runs in the bottom of 5th and top of 6th as it was 7-3 Bison, which proved more than enough as Nichols reliever Patrick Doyle allowed just one hit with no walks in his four innings of work between the 6th and 9th innings.

Boudreau led the Cardinal lineup with a 3-for-4 outing with one double, 1 RBI, and one run scored. Little went 1-for-3 with two steals to give him 29 stolen bases for the season.

Seven pitchers got into the game for Wesleyan, five of which threw a scoreless inning in relief. Dariusz Lukowski '27, Oliver Dmochowski '27, Tanner Mahon '27, Lucca Frattone '27, and James Marsden '26 combined to allow just two hits and no runs.

Wesleyan heads into postseason play with a showdown at Colby, the #1 seed and winner of the NESCAC East Division. The best-of-3 series begins with a Saturday doubleheader starting at Noon. If necessary, game 3 of the series is Sunday at 11 AM.
