O’Connell Carries Cardinals Over WestConn, 1-0

DANBURY, CT. – The unbeaten Wesleyan women's soccer team came away with a non-conference road win against Western Connecticut State University, 1-0, on Wednesday evening, thanks to the right foot of senior Katie O'Connell from Westside Stadium.

Unrelenting on the offensive push, the Cardinals (5-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 NESCAC) outshot the Wolves (6-4-1) by a mile as they put 10 on goal and another 11 attempts around the net. Wolves goalkeeper Gracen Regan faced all 10 shots, but O'Connell had the final say in the victory.

With the Cardinals making their way back into the Wolves defensive zone, Zoey Fagnan with full possession marched the ball down the far line and into the box where she was fouled. Awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute, O'Connell was given the go ahead to step up and take the shot alone. Off her right foot, the shot fell down the middle and into the left corner for the tally.

O'Connell records her third goal of the season, leading the Cardinals in goals while also leading with four assists and 10 points.

Juliette Vemmer '25 was given her first start of the season and earned the shutout as she faced three shots and made all three saves in goal.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they host No. 22 Tufts in NESCAC action at Jackson Field beginning at 12 p.m.
