MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Rebounding from a loss last weekend, the Wesleyan men's squash team fought down Haverford College, 5-4, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Wesleyan Round Robin hosted at the Rosenbaum Squash Center.
Senior
Morgan Shatzman led the way with a 3-0 sweep of Garret Fantini at #6 to kickstart the Cardinals. Clocking in his match at 21 minutes, Shatzman cleared with 11-9, 11-7, 11-6 final tallies.
Ethan Yan '25 came away with a 3-0 victory at #3, defeating Kai Thomas Schinaman in a 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 match final.
The final sweep for the Cardinals came at the hands of
Jack Lungstrum '25 in the #5 position. Pulling out 11-3, 11-9 scores through games one and two, Lungstrum battled it out with Qianzhi Zhao in game three with a 13-11 final to win the match.
Dhairya Shah '27 went four rounds with Aaryaman Jaising at #2. Shah came away with the 3-1 final score but not after falling in game one. Jaising took the first win 8-11, but Shah powered through the final three games and won 11-4, 11-3, 11-4.
Nailing a two-game comeback,
Abhinav Gupta '25 rallied with the final point for the Cardinals in a 3-2 triumph at #1. Facing Noah Tunis, Gupta was knocked in the first two games of the match. Tunis cleared with 7-11, 5-11 wins and was looking to sweep but Gupta answered with three wins in a row and recorded 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 final scores.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they face Navy in the second round of the Wesleyan Round Robin at 10 a.m.
