No. 24 Volleyball Rolls Past NYU in Three-Set Sweep

Cardinals win the opening set 25-4, hit .354 as a team in a dominant win over the Violets

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Traveling to New York City to play in front of many recent alumnae that live in and around the city, the No. 24 Wesleyan volleyball team was at their very best on Sunday as the Cardinals dominated NYU in three sets (25-4, 25-17, 25-14). That win signals the first-ever win for Wesleyan (12-1) over the Violets (11-6) in five all-time meetings.
 
The first set scoreline set the tone for the remainder of play as the Cardinals rattled off scoring runs of 9-0, 7-0, and 7-0 during the opening set. Wesleyan only needed eight kills while the Violets couldn't handle the Cardinal defense, finishing the set with three kills and 11 attack errors on 27 swings for a -.296 hitting percentage.
 
Wesleyan continued to pile it on in the early stages of the second set, winning the first four points and six of the first seven to bulid a sizeable lead. Another 6-1 Cardinal run made it 13-4 Wesleyan and even though NYU strung together a few mini scoring runs, it was Wesleyan who closed out the second set with two kills from Siena Steines '28 and Adrienne Nguyen '28 had a set-clinching kill as the Cardinals won 25-17.
 
The third set saw NYU challenge Wesleyan in the early stages with the Violets leading 5-4 at one point, but Wesleyan followed with a 6-1 run of their own and never looked back. NYU traded points and still were in the match trailing 16-13, only to see Wesleyan win nine of the final 10 points of the match to defeat the Violets 25-14.
 
The Cardinals hit .354 as a team, totaling 42 kills and eight errors on 96 swings. NYU finished with more attack errors (22) than kills (20) on their way to a -.022 attack percentage. Wesleyan posted 10 total blocks to give the Cardinals their fourth match this season with 10+ blocks in a match that ended in a 3-0 sweep.
 
Sophia Lindus '26 played one of her best matches of the season, going for 13 kills and two errors on 21 swings for a .524 attack percentage. She added eight digs to her match totals.
 
Three Cardinals each finished with seven kills including Mila Chan '28, Siena Steines '28, and India Clark '28. Chan added nine digs while Steines and Clark each finished with three total blocks.
 
Fiona LaCamera '27 finished with six total blocks and two kills while Katelyn Olin 2'7 had a near-idential stat line with four total blocks and two kills.
 
The Cardinals are back in action this upcoming weekend, starting with a trip to Hamilton for a 7 PM start against the Continentals.
