MIDDLETOWN, CT. - Rallying from a Friday night loss in the home opener, the Wesleyan men's hockey team defeated Amherst College, 2-1, on home ice for the first time in four years with the help of sophomore goaltender
Ethan Fehrenbaker '28, recording a career-high save count at Spurrier-Snyder Arena on Saturday evening.
Running all the way back to the 2021 season, the last win for the Cardinals over the Mammoths at home was a 4-3 victory on December 4. The Cardinals went 1-1 with the Mammoths last season, earning a road win in mid-November.
First to score this go around, it was
Jack Marottolo '26 with the goal, marking his second of the season with three and a half minutes of game underway. Stationed on the far wall just above the circle, Marottolo made contact with the pass from
Owen Mahar '29 in the corner, firing the puck into the left ninety. The Mammoths, fishing for results of the ever-relentless offense, tied the game up at one with less than a minute remaining in the period. Matt Vander Vort was awarded the goal.
Fehrenbaker, making his first appearance of the season in goal, totaled a career-high 39 saves and stonewalled the Mammoths through the second and third periods. Stopping 30 shots, including 18 in the third, Fehrenbaker made room for a Cardinals victory.
Will Rassier '29 was the tiebreak.
With 8:07 on the board, Rassier struck with his first-career goal as the Cardinals held the man advantage. With the Mammoths down on a tripping call, the Cardinals regained possession in their own zone and filed back down the near boards with

Hayden Hanes '27 driving down the middle. At the right post, Hanes made a pass over the crease to Rassier out left, his shot falling over the shoulder of Mammoths goaltender Vincent Lamberti.
Unhappy with the results, the Mammoths swarmed in the final 20 minutes but could not capitalize even with an extra attacker. Lamberti finished the evening with 15 saves in net.
Danny Judge '26 led the Cardinals from the faceoff, picking up 13 draw wins while blocking one shot.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Nov. 29, when they host Albertus Magnus at home at 7 p.m.
