MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Closing out the holiday weekend with a loss at home, the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team fell in non-conference action to Albertus Magnus College, 5-3 on Saturday night, as the team was led by underclassmen on the scoring front at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
Opening the scoring with just under four minutes of actinon underway from the opening faceoff, the Falcons (4-3-0 overall) struck in a manner that exemplified the tone for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals (2-3-0 overall), ready as ever, quickly rallied and tied the game up minute later off the stick of
Owen Mahar '29.
Danny Markham '28 earns the assist, setting up Mahar from out above a chaotic hustle outside the crease.
The Cardinals claimed a lead three minutes later, breaking the tie in the first period with some quick passing on the attack.
Dylan Margel '29 snapped the puck over the line as he and
Connor Sutherland '27 connected down low on the driving play. The game saw four goals in the first period alone, the Falcons closing out the first 20 minutes of action with a second game-tying goal.
While the second period passed without a goal, the Cardinals would get a second lead to open the third,
Andrew Haxton '28 earning the tiebreaker. From
Ethan Davidson '26 and
Troy Maldonado '28, Haxton was able to stuff the puck behind Falcon's goaltender Chase Hale. Despite the Cardinals' efforts on the drive, the Falcons would get the final word, scoring three unanswered goals including a short-handed empty-net goal.
Haxton led all Cardinals with five shots on goal, including three in the final period.
Danny Judge completed 10 draw wins from the faceoff circle.
In goal,
Ethan Fehrenbaker '28 finished the evening with 26 saves. Hale earned the win for the Falcons with 29 saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, December 3, at Salve Regina.
