MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Marking the first sweep of the season, the Wesleyan women's tennis team pulled no punches in a 7-0 NESCAC conquering of Colby College on Sunday afternoon, closing out the home opening weekend from the Bacon Field House.
Looking to gain a quick jump on the Mules,
Jackie Soloveychik '27 dropped only two points to Jade Finestone at No. 1. Soloveychik laid the groundwork for Finestone's defeat, sweeping set one before allowing Finestone any ground. Soloveychik took the 6-0, 6-2 win with the second point of the match.
Coming in at No. 5 with a victory to set the Cardinals up with wins across the lineup,
Olivia Chalik '28 defeated Amelie Gal in a 6-4, 6-3 matchup. Both wins at No. 1 and No. 5 allowed
Lane Durkin '27 and Alex Burnett '27 to enter the action and begin play.
Natalia Leroy '28 battled two tiebreaks in her No. 4 matchup with Waka Aida. Leroy finished set one in the lead but Aida's comeback in set two was by the slimmest of margins as extra points were needed to play out set three. Leroy was victorious, winning by a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 score.
At No. 3,
Sarah Youngberg '26 found herself with the set lead over Ella Novion before Novion fought back to a 6-6 tie in set two. Youngberg held Novion on the edge and claimed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win.
Breaking out in one of the closing matches of the evening, Durkin went 6-2, 6-3 over Colby's Michaela Landry at No. 2 before Burnett finished off the match with the Cardinals' closing point.
Burnett's first win of the season came off the tails of a doubles victory with teammate
Leila Epstein '26. Burnett's tiebreak win in set two gave way to the match win, defeating Isabella Suk 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The Cardinals opened the match with a doubles sweep, recording the first point of the afternoon over the Mules in standard fashion. Durkin and Youngberg defeated Landry and Suk, 6-2 at No. 1. The No 3 pairing of Burnett and Epstein put away Novion and Gal, 6-4. Soloveychik and Leroy at No. 2 allowed just one point in a 6-1 final.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, March 19, in the first match of their Spring Break trip, facing Christopher Newport at 12:30 p.m.
