Softball Drops Pair in Doubleheader at Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Wesleyan softball team dropped a pair of one-run games in a Wednesday doubleheader at Albertus Magnus, falling 3-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two. With the defeats, the Cardinals fall to 15-7 on the season while the Falcons are now 16-10.

Game one was scoreless up until the 6th inning as Abby Orso G'25 was working on a no-hitter, retiring 14 consecutive batters from the 1st inning through the 5th. The only baserunner Orso allowed in those five innings was a walk in the 1st.

Wesleyan opened the scoring in the 6th inning when Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 doubled with one out, followed by Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 who singled down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw to the infield. With two runners in scoring position, Cat Palmer '26 stepped up and drove both in on a two-run double to left center field.

Now armed with a lead, Orso worked another scoreless inning in the 6th, allowing just one runner on a hit by pitch, keeping her no-hitter alive into the 7th inning.

Orso's no-hit bid came to an end with a single to center field from Mikaela Scwhippert after Skylar Arent led off with a walk. With two runners in scoring position, Orso got a groundout to third base but the Falcons followed with three straight bunts that proved the difference in the end. The first from Colleen Edwards found a between Orso and Palmer at first base, scoring one run, then Megan Cross pinch hit and laid down a bunt right back to Orso who fielded the ball and lunged towards Scwhippert who managed to evade the tag to score from third.

With the game now tied 2-2 and runners on second and third, Amelia Boulli stepped to the batter's box and put down a third straight bunt, this one going back to Orso who had no play to make at home as Edwards scored the walk-off game-winning run.

Orso took the hard luck defeat after taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning, finishing with 6.2 innings and two hits allowed with two walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts.

Cassel-Siskind and Ella DeCrescenzo '27 both went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game one defeat.

Game two saw Jacelyn Lees '28 keep the Falcons off the scoreboard with four straight shutout innings to start. The Cardinal defense made a great play in the first as DeCrescenzo fielded a ball out in left, throwing to Waverly Smart '27 who gunned down Arent at home who was trying to score on a double from first base.

Lees continued to work out of jams, leaving at least one runner on base in each of the first four innings, including two runners in scoring position in the 3rd inning.

Albertus broke through with the only run of game two coming off the bat of Gianna Carrano who doubled to left field with two outs, scoring Gabby Rubino to make it 1-0 Falcons after five.

Wesleyan had at least one runner in scoring position in both the 6th and 7th innings, but couldn't get the clutch base hit. With Molly Lennon '26 and Cassel-Siskind in scoring position, Palmer lined out to shortstop to end the 6th. In the 7th, Smart singled to center with one out then stole second. She moved to third on a fly out to right, but stopped there as a strikeout finished off the game two win for Albertus.

Lees finished with five innings thrown in game two, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Whitney Gigante '28 came on for her first career appearance in the 6th inning and worked a scoreless frame.

The Cardinals are back on the road for a Friday doubleheader at Colby starting at 2 PM.
