Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Subdued at No. 2 Amherst, 4-0

AMHERST, MA. - Facing one of the top teams in the nation, the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team fell in NESCAC action to No. 2 Amherst College in a 4-0 shutout on Tuesday night, capping the series from Amherst's Orr Rink.

Unrelenting from the start, the Mammoths wasted little time in establishing the narrative of the game and were on the board by the midway mark as Gretchen Dann was credited with the tally on Sami Smith '27. Smith held through to the end of the period, brandishing 13 saves in the opening period.

The Mammoths struck again in the second period, making the most of a hooking call awarded to the Cardinals. Smith was solid on 20 saves, allowing just Malaya Anaba's goal. Down 2-0, the Cardinals rallied through the final 20 minutes, going shot for shot with the Mammoths as both Smith and Natalie Stott finished with 12 saves. The Mammoths would return two more goals from Annabel Raffin and Maeve Reynolds.

From the faceoff circle, Caroline Kee '26 led all Cardinals with 13 draw wins. Parker Caldara '29 and Aiko Sims '26 pressed the offense, finishing with three shots on Stott and two blocks.

Smith finished the evening with 45 saves in goal, the junior's second highest save count of the season.

The Cardinals return home on Friday, Jan. 30, when they host Conn. for a weekend series beginning at 7 p.m.
