No. 7 Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Me. – The No. 7 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team suffered a four-set defeat at the hands of Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium. The Cardinals (12-2, 5-2 NESCAC) drop both road matches in Maine this weekend while the Polar Bears (10-6, 4-2 NESCAC) completed a weekend sweep at home.

Wesleyan was the better side in the early stages of this match, hitting .440 with 14 kills on just 25 swings in the first set on their way to a 25-20 win. The Cardinals went on a 5-0 run to erase an early 7-4 deficit, then later used a 9-0 run to turn a 14-12 deficit into a 21-14 advantage. That run of nine unanswered points proved more than enough for the 25-20 set win.

The Cardinals then missed a chance to go two-sets up as Wesleyan led 11-8 in the early stages of the second set before later building a 19-14 lead, only to see Bowdoin flip the script with an 8-0 run of their own. Now trailing by three, the Cardinals showed some fight, lowering the deficit down to one at 23-22 and 24-23, but Bowdoin found the clinching point with a Zoe Ryu kill.

That late 8-0 Bowdoin run in the second set loomed large in the outcome as the Cardinals recorded 10 attack errors in the third set and followed with just five kills in the fourth set as the Polar Bears ran away with the win on 25-16 and 25-12 set wins to finish off the Cardinals.

Fiona LaCamera '27 and Ariella Garrell '29 tied for the team-lead with 10 kills apiece. LaCamera totaled 10 kills on 19 swings for a .421 attack percentage while Garrell totaled 10 kills on 27 swings for a .296 percentage. Garella's 10 kills marks the first double-digit kill output of her career.

Elliana Moreno '27 recorded 14 digs in the match while Alexa Schnell '29 had 14 assists, three kills and four digs and Lucy Konisky '30 finished with 14 assists, two kills, and three digs.

After spending the last three weekends playing away from home, the Cardinals are back in Silloway Gym on Friday night with a meeting against Tufts at 7 PM.
