Women's Soccer Falls to No. 10 Williams on Homecoming Weekend

MIDDLETOWN, CT. - Falling in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon, the Wesleyan women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 10 Williams College while led by senior captain Maria Utz with a late, second half goal. Wesleyan celebrated the Class of 2027 prior to the start of the game as they fall to 8-4-0 overall, 4-4-0 NESCAC.

The opening minutes came as a quick shake up for the Cardinals, the Ephs scoring two goals in under five minutes. Lucy Carrel opened the goal scoring for the Ephs, just one of the many offensive measures made by the Ephs as they outperformed the Cardinals for much of the first 45 minutes. The Ephs picked up a two-goal lead three minutes later after the Cardinals knocked the ball for an own goal.

Running to a three-goal game as the first half cut into the break, the Ephs scored with seconds on the board. The goal was credited to Olivia Bevilacqua. Cardinals' goalkeeper Maggie di Rienzo '29 finished the first half with five saves.

While the Ephs continued to hold the Cardinals to low mileage in front of Chelsae Mohammed, the Cardinals set pace and found their footing. The Cardinals finally caught a break in the 81st minute, slashing hopes of an Ephs shutout as Utz struck from the left post. Utz capitalized on the uncontrolled header that fell at her feet and caught Mohammed steps away from a proper save.

Utz, with her 12th goal of the season, led all Cardinals with five shots. di Rienzo and Marley Hansard '29 combined for nine saves while Mohammed finished with four for the Ephs.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they host Johnson & Wales at 6 p.m.
