#7 Cardinals Battle #2 Tufts in NESCAC Quarterfinal, Fall 4-2

MEDFORD, MA– The Wesleyan women's soccer team saw the NESCAC season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to #2 Tufts in the NESCAC Championship quarterfinals at Bello Field.

Scoring her 16th goal of the season in the second half, senior Maria Utz tied the program's all-time single season scoring record, set in 1992 by Flo Stueck '96. Utz's 38 points break Stueck's 1992 record of 37 points in a single season.

The Cardinals (9-7-0 overall, 4-6-0 NESCAC) fell behind 2-0 in the first half after goals from Jordyn Miller and Waverly Sumner placed the Cardinals in dangerous elimination territory. The Cardinals responded quickly after the break as Utz found the back of the net just five minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to one.

The Jumbos (12-0-3 overall, 7-0-3 NESCAC) answered less than a minute later, but the Cardinals continued to battle. In the 56th minute, Harper Cohn '30 scored off an assist from Taylor Hill '28, bringing the Cardinals within one at 3-2.

The Jumbos added an insurance goal in the 80th minute to secure the victory, advancing to the NESCAC semifinals.

Utz led all Cardinals with five shots on goal. In goal, freshman goalkeeper Sophie Thibault finished with three saves in goal. Gigi Edwards earned the win with four saves.

The Cardinals await NCAA Tournament selection on Monday, Nov. 9.
