HARTFORD, CT. - Closing the regular season with a road trip to Hartford, the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team fell in NESCAC action 6-2 as they were overpowered by Trinity College on Saturday afternoon, splitting the series 1-1 following a Friday night victory at home.
With the shutters closing on the regular season, the Cardinals finish fifth in the NESCAC standings and will face No. 4 Middlebury in the opening round of the NESCAC Championships.
Reeling from the 3-1 loss the night prior, the Bantams whipped into shape early and placed three goals on the board before the Cardinals managed the puck behind Aiden Hopewell in the third period.
Andrew Haxton '28 cut the score to just a two-goal lead by the Bantams, earning an assist from
Danny Markham '28 in the process.
Following Haxton's goal, the Cardinals took just two minutes to adjust and pulled a second goal on Hopewell with the Bantams down a man on a hooking cross-checking call. Set up with help from
Jack DesRuisseaux '29 and
Connor Sutherland '27,
Ethan Davidson '26 tallied the second goal and cut the lead to one.
The Bantams placed three more goals on the books, effectively positioning themselves for the 6-2 victory as the third period ended.
Owen Mahar '29 led all Cardinals with four shots on goal.
In goal,
Patrick McDevitt '28 finished the afternoon with 36 stops on 42 shots. Hopewell saved 22 Cardinal shots.
