WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. - Scoring a game-tying goal in the opening minutes of the first period,
Andrew Haxton '28 was the rink leader for the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team in a 4-1 road loss to Williams College on Friday night at Williams' Lansing Chapman Rink.
The opening minutes of the Little Three matchup saw a flurry of scoring as the Ephs looked to correct the previous meeting between the two programs. The Cardinals (7-12-0 overall, 6-7-0 NESCAC) bested the Ephs (7-11-2 overall, 6-8-0 NESCAC) 6-1 on Jan. 9, and this time it was the Ephs on the board following five minutes of action.
Sparing just three minutes of play, Haxton struck for the Cardinals and tied the game up at one.
Braden Pohlman '28, receiving the puck at the Cardinals' goal line, transferred possession to
Danny Markham '28 as the Cardinals closed in on the Ephs down the far wall. Markham cleared his pass through the faceoff circles to Haxton out left, Haxton's shot flipping over the shoulder of Ephs goaltender Harrison Fogel. The Ephs responded with the game-winning goal just 36 seconds later.
A scoreless second period saw the Cardinals awarded two power plays, giving way to plenty of scoring opportunities but the Ephs' defense held through to the final 20 minutes despite the Cardinals outshooting on a wide margin. The Ephs closed the game with two additional goals.
Haxton's goal was accompanied by nine shots on goal, leading all Cardinals.
In goal,
Patrick McDevitt '28 finished the game with 25 saves. Fogel stopped 37 of 38 shots faced.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 7, when they face Middlebury on the road at 3 p.m.
