ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Wesleyan wrestling team went 1-2 on the day, defeating host Oneonta and falling to nationally ranked No. 20 Williams and No. 23 Ithaca on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Oneonta 23-19 and fell to Williams 39-9 and Ithaca 39-7. With the results, Wesleyan is 5-2 in the dual match season.
Chris Hong '27 went 3-0 on the day for the Cardinals while
Hayden Myers '27,
Ike Guttentag '26 and
Ronnie Christolin '28 all finished 2-1. Myers' defeat is his first of the season and came in overtime against Top 10 ranked Isaias Torres at 141 while Guttentag and Christolin both fell to nationally-ranked Williams wrestlers.
Wesleyan 23, Oneonta 19 | RESULTS
- Both teams won five bouts in the 10 contested varsity weight classes, with a pair of crucial pins from Hayden Myers '27 and Roman Martinez '27 proving to be the difference as all five of Oneonta's wins were by decision or major decision.
- Chris Hong '27 opened with a 14-4 major decision win over Billy Colloca at 125.
- Myers came through with a dramatic, last second pin of Avery Leonard at 141, as the referee's hand hit the mat with just one second showing on the clock.
- Ike Guttentag '26 made it two straight wins for the Cardinals with a 5-3 decision triumph over Kingston Strouse at 149.
- The Wesleyan win streak stretch to three as Ronnie Christolin '28 dominated Matt Verri in a 17-3 major decision win, pushing the score to 17-3 Wesleyan.
- Oneonta followed with back-to-back major decisions, cutting the deficit to 17-11 with three bouts remaining.
- The pivotal bout in the dual came at 184 with Martinez pinning Brandon Cirincione in 2:51 to push the Cardinals out in front by a 23-11 margin.
- Wesleyan lost the final two bouts, both by major decisions, as the Cardinals closed out a 23-19 win.
No. 20 Williams 39, Wesleyan 9 | RESULTS
- Hong and Myers picked up the lone wins for Wesleyan in this Little Three clash, both improving to 2-0 on the day.
- Hong landed a 19-2 tech fall win over Lucas Johnson in 5:31 while Myers defeated Donnie Morton in an 8-0 major decision.
- Guttentag wrestled against Caleb Seyfried, the No. 13 ranked wrestler at 149, and Guttentag showed well in a 6-1 decision loss.
- Christolin was downed in a 14-1 major decision to Peter Kane, the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 157.
No. 23 Ithaca 37, Wesleyan 9 | RESULTS
- The Cardinals won three varsity bouts, with Hong landing his third win of the quad meet while Guttentag and Christolin triumphed in their respective weight classes.
- Hong toppled Cosmo Damiani at 125 in a 7-4 decision.
- Guttentag won by the identical 7-4 scoreline at 149 over William Bentrim.
- Christolin finished his day with a 4-3 decision win at 157 over Brian Bienus.
- Myers and Torres needed an overtime period to decide a winner at 141 with Torres landing a match-winning takedown to score a 4-1 sudden victory win.
Wesleyan closes out the dual match portion of the schedule next Saturday with the Cardinals' only home match of the season. The Cardinals will compete against Centenary at 2 PM from the Bacon Field House for Senior Day.
