Smith Clinches 5-2 Victory for Women’s Tennis Over No. 5 Emory

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – In another dominate effort by the underclassmen, the fourth-ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team defeated national rival No. 5 Emory University for the second time in two weeks in a 5-2 effort that saw Kendall Smith '29 clinch the match point.

The Cardinals previously met the Eagles at the ITA Indoor National Championship on March 1, completing a 4-3 win of the then third-ranked program.

In the wake of several veteran absences in the lineup, the underclassmen representing the Cardinals on the court have continued to meet the moment and push the Cardinals to finish line. Smith, slotted at No. 5, ran a 7-5, 6-4 victory over opponent Holyn Karp as the Cardinals held the thinnest of leads to that point.

At No. 4, Mariia Kornilova '29 dropped just four points to Yanire Marte, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win for the Cardinals. A 6-4, 6-2 triumph for the Cardinals at No. 3 saw Lara Afolayanka '29 upset national contender Izzy Antanavicius.

Agnes Guggenheim '29 was forced to three sets after Iris Berman tied the match up at one. Guggenheim ran it back and finished with the 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 tally.

In doubles play, the Cardinals swept all three matches. Leila Epstein '26 and Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 defeated Emily Kantrovitz and Berman, 6-4. At No. 2, Afolayanka and Guggenheim defeated Antanavicius and Yanire 6-2. The Cardinals' third pairing of Kornilova and Smith rallied to a 6-2 win over Rachel Hernandez and Karp.

The Cardinals return to the court on Monday, March 16, to face No. 13 Johns Hopkins at 12 p.m.
