AUBURNDALE, FL. - Dropping the first doubleheader of the season, the Wesleyan University baseball team fell in non-conference action to Dickinson College on Sunday afternoon, falling 8-4 in game one before a 14-10 loss in game two as the team continues through the Spring Break trip at Lake Myrtle Park.
Facing a two-run hole early in game one, the Cardinals caught a break in the second inning following a walk for
Marcus Jang '26. Jang reached third on a fielder's choice with
Oliver Kwan '28 at the plate before scoring as
Matthew DeBenedictis '29 hit a sacrificed fly to left field.
The Cardinals would get another chance in the third with
Sam Hensinger '26 walked by the Red Devils. Hensinger continued on with a wild pitch and passed ball to set him up at third. An error at short stop with Will Moore '26 up to bat sent Hensinger home for the second run of the afternoon.
Running two more back in the fourth, the Devils held their lead well into the seventh inning before plating four more runs. The bottom of the inning saw
Derek Lacey '28 single out to second base, advancing on a wild pitch. Moore's double to left field gave Lacey room to score prior to Jang's triple sending Moore home as well.
Shamus Kelly '28 pitched four innings, taking the loss as he struck out five while allowing four runs and two hits.
Game two was a complete reverse course for the Cardinals, climbing to a 10-run lead in the third following two scoreless innings to open the game. Lacey kicked off the action, doubling to right field and was followed by
Sebastian Ortiz '28 walking to first. Moore ran Lacey home as
Tucker DeWolf '28 advanced the bases with a walk. Hensinger's single to right field left room for Moore and Ortiz to score while DeWolf reached home with
Jonah Timmons' '27 double out to the centerfielder.
Timmons and Hensinger brought the game to a six-run lead, and the Devils made a pitching change, leading to several wild pitches placing DeBenedictis and Jang on base. DeBenedictis reached home and Jang stole third with
Cole Sipes '29 up to bat, hitting a single to the mound to place Jang home. Lacey was the 10
th run of the inning as Moore hit through center field.
Undeterred, the Devils scored nine unanswered runs in the bottom of the inning, placing within one of a tie game. The Devils tied the game in the fourth before the lead came in the sixth with another four runs.
Moore led all Cardinals with a run, three hits, and three RBI. From the mound,
Dariusz Lukowski '27 pitched just over two innings, marking two strikeouts and five allowed runs.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, March 10, when they face Rochester at 2:15 p.m.
