MALDEN, Mass. – The No. 6 Wesleyan women's crew team took part in the Malden Racing Series on Saturday out on the Malden River against No. 3 Tufts, No. 4 Wellesley and No. 8 Bates.
The 2
nd Varsity 8 was the best boat on the day for the Cardinals as they landed a win over the two-time defending national champion Jumbos with a time of 7:56.1 in the first round compared to 8:07.9 for the Jumbos. Racing against Bates in the grand final, Wesleyan's 2V8 turned in a stellar performance, finishing with a time of 7:46.7 that bested the Bobcats (8:12.7) by more than 25 seconds.
The Varsity 8 competed against Tufts in the opening race and couldn't overcome the back-to-back national champion Jumbos who clocked in at 7:39.8 compared to 7:56.5 for the Cardinals. The V8 raced again in the afternoon and fell to Bates by just under 10 seconds as the Cardinals crossed the line in 7:42.4 compared to 7:33.9 for the Bobcats.
The 3
rd Varsity 8 rounded out the day with a loss to Tufts in the opener, clocking in at 8:18.1 compared to 8:01.4 for Tufts. Back in action in the afternoon, Wellesley clocked in at 8:20.4 to defeat the Cardinals who finished in 8:34.8.
The Cardinals also fielded a Varsity 4+ boat which came up short against Wellesley with a time of 10:34.4 compared to 9:58.9.
Wesleyan has a week to prepare for the next race which will be held on Saturday at Onota Lake against Williams and Trinity.
