Women’s Tennis Makes Quick Work of Bates in Senior Day Sweep

MIDDLETOWN, CT. -  The wheel continues to turn for the Wesleyan women's tennis team, churning out a complete 7-0 sweep of Bates College on Saturday afternoon as the team improves to a nine-match winning streak in honor of the Class of 2026.

Saluting senior Leila Epstein and Sarah Youngberg, the Cardinals were quick to open up the afternoon and clinched doubles play with a 3-0 sweep. Epstein and Youngberg returned as the No. 1 pairing, defeating Iris Westmoreland and Emelyn Harris, 7-6.

At No. 2, Lara Afolayanka '29 and Agnes Guggenheim '29 dropped just one point to Isabella Saul and Grace Lafountain in a 6-1 finish. The first of the doubles wins went to Mariia Kornilova '29 and Kendall smith '29, sweeping Avni Bakre and Lia Swire, 6-0.

Youngberg, competing at No. 3, returned a second victory on the day, defeating Harris in a 6-1, 6-2 senior finish. Kornilova went head-to-head with Bakre again, and brushed Bakre off with a 6-0, 6-3 final. At No. 5, Natalia Leroy '28 allowed one point to Swire in set one, completing the match in 6-1, 6-0.

Heading the lineup in the No. 1 slot, Guggenheim ran a 6-2, 6-0 finish over Westmoreland in a contested match. A 6-1, 6-1 win for the Cardinals went to Afolayanka at No. 2, defeating Saul in little time. Closing out the lineup, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 put away LaFountain, 6-0, 6-1 to improve the Cardinals to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in the NESCAC.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, April 25, when they face Amherst on the road at 10 a.m.
