MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A pair of gems in the circle from
Ella DeCrescenzo '27 and
Whitney Gigante '28 helped lead the Wesleyan softball team to a 6-1 and 4-2 sweep of Albertus Magnus on Tuesday. Wesleyan (14-9) moves to 7-1 over their last eight games, recording sweeps in three of their past four doubleheaders, while the Falcons (14-11) lose consecutive games for the first time since March 13.
Â
DeCrescenzo, the game one starter, had everything working as she tossed a complete game two-hitter with four strikeouts and just one run allowed. After allowing one run in the 1
st, DeCrescenzo worked six consecutive shutout innings with just one hit allowed past the opening frame. This marked the third time in the past four starts that DeCrescenzo has gone the distance.
Â
Wesleyan had an immediate answer to the one run from Albertus in the 1
st as
Cat Palmer '26 came through with an RBI single back up the middle to plate
Molly Lennon '26 from second base.
Â
The Cardinal infield turned a 6-4-3 double play in the 4
th as Izzy Barreiro grounded to
Waverly Smart '27 at short who flipped to Lennon at second then the throw down to Palmer at first was in time for the inning-ending DP.
Â
The game took another turn in the bottom of the 4
th when the bases were loaded with two outs for
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 who came through with a single out to center on an 0-2 count to plate two runs, then another came around on a fielding error by the Albertus center fielder to make it 4-1.
Â
DeCrescenzo continued to mow through the Falcons' lineup before the Cardinals tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 6
th. Lennon led off with a double then came around to score on a fielding error. Palmer had an RBI groundout to short to plate Cassel-Siskind from third and DeCrescenzo got a 1-2-3 7
th inning to finish off the 6-1 win.
Â
Game two saw Wesleyan take an early lead on a three-run 1
st inning. Cassel-Siskind sent an RBI single back up the middle to plate Lennon who led off with a double. Another run came in on a fielding error then a passed ball with the bases loaded saw another Cardinal run come across.
Â
Smart came through with a run-scoring single out to left center in the 3
rd to make it 4-0 Wesleyan while Gigante left two runners on in both the 3
rd and 4
th innings.
Â
Albertus broke up the shutout bid in the 6
th with one run but the inning ended with a pop out to Palmer at first with the bases loaded as the Falcons missed a chance to bring the deficit closer.
Â
Then in the 7
th, Gigante reentered for
Kelly Baker '26 in the circle with the game-tying run at the plate and one out. Gigante indued a groundout to third then she got Amelia Ovalles to strike out swinging to finish off a 4-2 win.
Â
Gigante tossed 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts to pick up her sixth win of the season.
Â
In the two games combined, Lennon went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three walks, and four runs scored. Cassel-Siskind had three hits, three RBI, and three stolen bases.
Â
The Cardinals are back at home on Saturday in a doubleheader with Trinity that starts at Noon. Wesleyan will honor its five-player senior Class of 2026 before the game as Palmer, Baker, Cassel-Siskind, Lennon, and
Alexis Amante '26 will all be honored for Senior Day.
