Baseball Squeezed to 7-6 Loss to Albertus Magnus at Home

MIDDLETOWN, CT. -  While battling the elements at Dresser Diamond on Tuesday evening, it was certainly a game of inches for the Wesleyan University baseball team as they went run for run with Albertus Magnus College while ultimately squeezing to a 7-6 loss following a late run at the top of the ninth inning.

The Falcons climbed to 1-0 lead in the second inning following Kevin Brown's '28 no hit opener, the lead quickly crumbled when the Cardinals stepped up in the second half. With bases loaded, Matthew DeBenedictis '29 and James Marsden '26 walked, advancing Cole Sipes '29 and Sam Suniewick '29 to the plate.

Striking again in the fourth with a tie game after the Falcons landed another run, Tucker DeWolf '28 scored the first of two runs as DeBenedictis nailed a ball to center field following his own double. The Falcons returned their lead on a RBI double but only led by one heading into the sixth.

DeBenedictis tripled to right field, giving way to DeWolf's second run of the ball game, tying the game at four. The Falcons snagged the lead again but a fielder's choice for Sipes left enough room for Kato Mangum '28 and Sam Hensinger '26 to overtake the Falcons once more. Despite this, the Falcons singled a ball to left field and tangled the game at six.

Tied now at the top of the final inning, the Falcons scored on a passed ball, scoring the game-winning run as the Cardinals could not return a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Cardinals rotated nine pitchers against the Falcons with Marsden taking the loss pitching just over one inning as the closer. Marsden struck out four, while dropping just one run. Ben Bryant '29 and Brady Wilson '29 each pitched one inning without allowing a run.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, April 10, when they host Williams at 4 p.m.
