MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A packed Silloway Gym paid witness to a stellar performance from the No. 14 Wesleyan volleyball team, highlighted by a 14-kill showing from
Mila Chan '28, as the Cardinals landed a 3-0 sweep of Swarthmore on Friday night. Wesleyan (4-0) remains unbeaten on the year, earning sweeps in three of four matches to start the season.
The final set scoreline does not tell the full story as the Cardinals and Garnet were back-and-forth throughout most of the opening two sets as Wesleyan triumphed 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 in the end. Swarthmore used a 5-0 run to lead 10-6 early in the first set before Wesleyan bounced right back with a 6-0 run of their own off the serve of
Carly Grumet '28. After trading points, Wesleyan scored three straight points which turned into a 6-2 run that made it 21-17 Cardinals. The Garnet cut the deficit down to three but
Alexa Schnell '29 landed a kill followed by what was the fifth kill in the set from Chan to clinch an opening set win.
The second set featured 10 ties and five lead changes with neither side leading by more than three points in the entire set. Swarthmore led 17-15 and later 21-18 but couldn't close as Wesleyan scored four answered points to take a 22-21 lead on the Chan serve. It was all square at 23 apiece when Grumet slammed home her fourth kill of the set and then a costly attack error from Maggie Rankin gave the Cardinals a 25-23 set win.
Wesleyan made a few changes to the lineup in the third set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead following a 6-0 scoring run, again on the Chan serve as the junior outside hitter finished the match with all five of Wesleyan's service aces in the match. Wesleyan stretched their advantage to 16-9 and later to as many as nine points before closing out the 25-16 win to clinch the match.
The Cardinals hit .312 in the third set on their way to hitting over .200 from the match compared to .109 for Swarthmore. The Cardinals finished +13 in digs (59-46) as three Cardinals hit double figures while four each had at least eight digs. Chan was stellar throughout, totaling 14 kills and one error on 29 swings for a .448 attack percentage. She added 12 digs and five aces (just one shy of her career-high).
Elliana Moreno '27 led the back row with 13 digs while Schnell had 10 digs to go along with 12 assists.
Fiona LaCamera '27 hit .455 with six kills and four blocks in the match.
Wesleyan is back in action in Worcester on Saturday as the Cardinals face the host WPI at 11 AM before taking on Plymouth State at 1 PM in Worcester.
