MIDDLETOWN, CT. -Â Â Â The Wesleyan University women's soccer team erupted for four first-half goals and never looked back, cruising to a 6-1 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field. The win moved the Cardinals to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
The Cardinals continued their opening tear as they threw down three goals in the first 45 minutes for the fourth game in a row with four total as they entered the half. Wasting little time finding the back of the net,
Beatrix Delaney '27 opened the scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from
Kerenza Leahey '27. Leahey's battle through the zone found Delaney inside the box.
Taylor Hill '28 doubled the advantage less than six minutes later, with
Maria Utz '27 providing the assist. Utz took off down the far line and into the corner, crossing the ball to Hill for a header at the line. Stevens answered in the 18th minute, but the Cardinals immediately responded.
Rachel Katz '28 fixed the two-goal cushion just 33 seconds later, assisted by
Bridget Taketa '29 and
Juliette Sullivan '27.
Wesleyan's fourth goal in the 30th minute was converted by
Meredith Feiner '28, sinking a pass from Katz to send the Cardinals into halftime with a 4-1 lead
The offensive pressure continued after the break.
Romi Schreiber '28 net a goal in the 50th minute unassisted, and
Sheridan Snow '28capped the scoring in the 59th minute on an assist from Utz as Leahey landed the free kick from midfield.
Marley Hansard '29 played for 77 minutes, making two saves before she was relieved by
Maggie di Rienzo '29. Lucy Smith finished with four saves in goal for the Ducks.
The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they host Tufts at home beginning at 6 p.m.
