BRUNSWICK, Me. – The No. 10 ranked Wesleyan field hockey team fell victim to a late game-winning goal from Katie Athanasoulas with just under four minutes remaining to give No. 15 Bowdoin a 2-1 win over the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (3-1, 0-1 NESCAC) see their unbeaten run come to an end in their NESCAC opener while the Polar Bears (3-1, 2-1 NESCAC) pick up a second league win of the season.
 
Keira O'Flynn '29 made a pair of saves in a scoreless first quarter, but the action picked up in the second when each team recorded one shot and one goal each in the frame.
 
Wesleyan was first on the board when the ball came to Teddy Tolbert '28 just outside the circle who drove in and attempted a drive towards traffic in front of the cage. Emilia Napolitano '29 was able to get a piece of the ball with her stick, deflecting in her first career goal.
 
Bowdoin struck back with a goal in open play just five minutes later as Fei Yang-Sady sent a speculative ball into the circle. O'Flynn came off her line to play the ball but Hannah Balmelli hustled and beat her to the spot. Balmelli's touch created space and she knocked in the equalizer as O'Flynn came sprawling to her right to try and play the ball to no avail.
 
Emily Smith '29 nearly put the Cardinals ahead midway through the third quarter as Bridget FitzGerald '30 hustled to get a ball on the near side end line. FitzGerald centered towards traffic where the ball landed on Smith's stick. An initial attempt on goal was saved by goalkeeper Eva Filipponi but the rebound came to Smith who lofted a shot destined for goal only to see Isabella Packard reach high in the air with her stick for a crucial defensive save.
 
O'Flynn came up with a big stop on Yang-Sady at the far post on a Bowdoin penalty corner midway through the fourth to keep the score tied. Then it was Filipponi's turn who made a key save on Smith with her right foot on a Wesleyan penalty corner with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.
 
A dramatic fourth quarter reached a crescendo as Bowdoin transitioned the ball quickly upfield and drew a penalty corner. The first corner drew another foul which led to the ultimate game-winner as a shot from distance was initially saved by O'Flynn but the rebound was loose with a lot of bodies in front of cage. The ball remained loose for several seconds before Athanasoulas swept in a goal with 3:44 remaining at the far post. Wesleyan sent the play to a video review, looking for a touch call on a Bowdoin player, but the officials kept their initial ruling.
 
Wesleyan pulled their goalie following the go-ahead Bowdoin goal but couldn't generate any shots on-goal in the closing minutes as Bowdoin prevailed in the end.
 
Shots favored Bowdoin 11-9 (8-5 shots on goal) while the Polar Bears held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.
 
After four straight road games to start the year, Wesleyan hosts Tufts on Wednesday at 6 PM on Hicks Field for the Cardinals' 2026 home opener.
