MIDDLETOWN, CT. - Led by a pair of goals and five points from senior captain
Yousuf Saeed, the Wesleyan men's soccer team tore through a 3-1 non-conference win over WestConn on Tuesday night as
Nnamdi Emehelu '29 struck a game-winning first career goal on Smith Field.
Leveling the first goal of the night with an awarded penalty kick in the ninth minute, Saeed's heroics led to the second five-point game of his career. The first half of the match tilted entirely towards the Cardinals (5-2-1 overall) as they circled the Wolves' (7-3-3 overall) defense, hitting nine shots to one with the Wolves struggling to clear the zone.
With 17 minutes now underway, Emehelu's first goal as a Cardinal began as a free-kick following a yellow card awarded to the Wolves. Saeed stepped up to take the kick, the ball falling to the head of Emehelu and into the left corner as it bounced off the hand of Wolves' goalkeeper Makai Smith.
Saeed tallied his second of the match following the half, returning his own rebounded shot behind Smith after a throw in from the far line resulted in an initial blocked shot. Saeed followed through and totaled the scoring for the night despite the Wolves breaking through at 65 minutes.
In goal,
Sam Adiutori '28 finished with three saves through 90 minutes. Smith and Aime Ruggles combined for eight saves for the Wolves.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they face Hamilton the road at 2 p.m.
