GENEVA, N.Y. – The Wesleyan volleyball team dominated the competition for a pair of convincing 3-0 sweeps over Oswego State and SUNY Geneseo to open the 2026 season on Saturday at the Heron Invitational hosted by William Smith. The Cardinals (2-0) hit .370 and .373, respectively, in the two matches and had 20 blocks combined in the course of the day.
Opening the year against Oswego State, the Cardinals won by set scorelines of 25-9, 25-14, 25-18. A balanced attack saw four different Cardinals finish with at least six kills while three others had three kills each in the win. Wesleyan hit .600 in the opening set, recording 14 kills with just two errors on 20 total attempts. The Cardinals won at least five consecutive points in all three sets against Oswego State including an 8-0 run in the first set.
Mila Chan '28 and
Carly Grumet '28 tied for the team-lead with eight kills each while Chan added six digs and Grumet posted three aces and three blocks.
Siena Steines '28 hit .500 with seven kills on 12 swings and
Fiona LaCamera '27 had six kills and seven total blocks.
Adrienne Nguyen '28 led the Cardinals with 10 digs and
Ella Blair '28 saw the court for the first time since 2024, recording a team-high 17 assists.
In the nightcap against SUNY Geneseo, Wesleyan only got stronger as the match went along, as the Cardinals won by a scoreline of 25-16, 25-14, 25-9. The Cardinals were ultra consistent on offense, hitting .367, .389, and .370 in the three sets while holding Geneseo to a -.058 attack percentage in the contest.
Steines put on a clinic with nine kills and no attack errors on 14 attempts, hitting .643 in the match. Grumet recorded six kills and a team-high eight digs. Chan posted five kills and five digs while
India Clark '28 was a perfect 5-for-5 on her swings, hitting 1.000. LaCamera added three more kills to go along with five total blocks.
Wesleyan led 14-5 in the opening set before finishing off a nine-point set win in what was the closest of the three sets. The second set saw the Cardinals hold a 17-14 lead before closing with seven unanswered points on the Blair serve. Then in the third set, Wesleyan turned a 9-8 lead into a 25-9 set win, winning 16 of the final 17 points including 11 straight to close out the match.
The Cardinals finish off the weekend with a Noon match on Sunday against the host William Smith.
