Goals

  • To serve as a support system/ mentors for those athletes who compete on teams without much diversity and freshmen.

  • To further diversify the Wesleyan athletic program and enhance the athletic experience of student-athletes of color.

  • Provide avenues to give back to the community, network with alumni, find internships, and create positive discussion.

Since the spring of 2017 we have completed the following events:

Introductory Council Meeting: Introduced council to others in the athletic department and made first push to build collective.

Panel at Bulkeley High School: Council members went to the school and met 12 of their student-athletes. A group discussion was had to help the kids understand the recruiting process and all of the avenues available to them to pursue athletics/education after high school. We also discussed issues that pertain to everyday life and how our council dealt with them.

SACLC Luncheon: Had members of collective meet with council to foster a better relationship and encourage more involvement in council initiatives.

1st Annual Cardinal Community Classic 3v3 Basketball Tournament: The classic was an event that brought all those at Wesleyan and in the Middletown community together in the battle against cancer. It was completely run by student-athletes that led to raising money for the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Unit. -- Jordan Bonner '19

NESCAC Conference Call: Four members of our council set up a video call with ohter schools in the conference, who have established student of color gorups. They were able to share ideas and events, which will hopefully help each school continue to better the experience of their athletes of color. I?t was agreed upon to try to meet via video call at least once a semester to continue to share ideas. We hope to bring all the groups together in person in the near future.

Bulkeley High School Day at Wesleyan: May 9th we hosted student-athletes from Bulkeley on campus to meet with our council and collective. To experience a day at Wesleyan.  They were able to meet our athletes, tour our facility/campus and enjoy lunch in the dining hall. We also held a group discussion where we talked about life, school, sports and leadership. We hope to continue a relationship with Bulkeley and their students for years to come.
