Lee-Ann Markowski Header

  • Hometown: Cranston, Rhode Island
  • Sports: Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Softball
  • Major(s): Psychology/Italian Studies
  • Career after Wes: School psychologist in a high school and I also coached high school sports for many years.
  • Favorite memory at Wes: I can't say that I have a favorite memory, but rather 4 years of wonderful memories
  • Achievements at Wes: I was a member of the 1980 Field Hockey team that several years ago was inducted into the Wes Athletics Hall of Fame. I also was part of a group of women that worked with the athletics department to begin the softball program at Wes. Beyond this, for me, it also was an achievement in building the confidence to take advantage of the education that I received at Wes, to be a member of 3 sports teams at Wes and to take the opportunity to study in Florence for my Junior year. All of these experiences I consider great accomplishments that have been invaluable.
  • Thoughts on the initial passage of Title IX (personally and on campus at the time): Title IX was passed when I was very young, so I never really thought much about it. I now look back and realize all of the inequities that existed in sports for girls/women even though Title IX had already been passed. For example, I played Ice Hockey at Wes and we were issued the Men's team's old equipment and uniforms, which would not be acceptable now. I have coached high school teams for many years, and the influence of Title IX has become more evident over the years and has resulted in more equity for girls and women.
  • Thoughts on Wesleyan currently, specifically women’s athletics: It is great to see the success of the women's athletics programs over the past few years. Sounds like the commitment and investment from the university in the women's athletics programs has increased over the years.
  • Advice to current student-athletes: Carry the red and black and the cardinal spirit with you forever...approach everything in your life with the same enthusiasm and curiosity that you had while at Wesleyan and always maintain a connection with the friends that you have made at Wes.
