Walter Curry Headshot 2021-22

Walter Curry

In 2024-25, Walter Curry enters his 24th season as the head coach of the Wesleyan men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs.

During his tenure at Wesleyan, Curry has coached four National Champions - Jenna Flateman '03 won the indoor 55m dash in 2003 with a time of 7.03, Ellen Davis '07 won the indoor 5000m in 2007 with a time of 16:43.73, Ivie Uzamere '20 won the weight throw with a toss of 19.36m in 2019, and Grace Devanny '23 was victorious in the indoor 400m with a time of 54.96 seconds in 2023. Curry has also coached 51 NCAA qualifiers (32 indoor, 19 outdoor) and 28 All-Americans (20 indoor, eight outdoor). In conference competition, Curry has coached several individuals and relays to NESCAC Titles. Most recently, Grace Devanny won the 200m and 400m while the Cardinals won both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays at the 2023 NESCAC Championships. Wesleyan amassed 67 points at the 2023 conference championship meet, good enough for fifth place, which marks the highest finish for Wesleyan at the NESCAC title meet since 2003.

Before coming to Wesleyan, Curry was an assistant coach at Boston College, where he coached three Division I All-Americans and several Big East All-Conference and All-New England performers. Prior to his time at BC, he was a guest clinician at the 2000 and 2001 New England High School Track & Field Coaches Clinic, and taught hurdles at the Brown University Track & Field Camp from 1995-2002.

Curry graduated from Iowa State University where he had a decorated career as a hurdler and a sprinter. During his time as a Cyclone, he was a member of the indoor and outdoor Big Eight Conference Championship squads. Individually, Curry had several top-three finishes in the conference meet throughout the years, while also earning a spot on the Iowa State 5—meter and 110-meter hurdles top-10 list. In 1986, Curry qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship. It was during his time as an undergraduate student that he began his coaching career, volunteering at the Cyclones’ summer camp in 1985 and 1986.

Additionally, Curry has represented Wesleyan athletics as a committee member on the ECAC Championship Meet Committee, and the New England Division III Men’s Cross Country / Track & Field Association as vice president and president.

Curry is also a USATF Level II certified coach in three of the four track & field event disciplines, "sprints/hurdles/relays", along with his certification in the “jump events" and “throw events”. Curry had the good fortune to be involved in the teaching of the “hurdle event" as the writer, co-producer and clinician for an instructional video on hurdling, which was first distributed nationally by Championship Books and Video Productions in 1998, and is still in circulation today, teaching high school athletes and coaches the principles of the hurdle event.

Curry lives with his family in Torrington, Conn.
