It took 102:10, but the visiting Williams College women's soccer team finally broke through a stubborn Wesleyan University defense to keep its undefeated season alive, beating the Cardinals 1-0 with a goal by junior Kristie Kirshe in the second overtime. The Ephs improved to 12-0-1 overall and 8-0 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan dropped to 4-5-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the conference.
Neither team was able to produce a quality scoring chance in the first half, though the visiting Ephs controlled field position for most of the period. Williams outshot Wesleyan 7-2 in the half, 2-1 on goal.
The Cardinals put on some good early pressure, getting two shots on goal in the first 1:30. The Ephs had two good chances in the half, including one that found the back of the net, but both of them were rules offsides. Their other best chance was a last-second header by junior Kristie Kirshe, but Cardinal sophomore goalie Megan Hanan (Sammamish, WA) smothered it.
Isabel Clements almost ended it for Wesleyan with 4:41 left in the first overtime when she blasted a shot from 15 yards that was saved by Eph netminder Tressa Palcheck. Maddie Swarr just missed for Williams with 2:59 left when she fired a shot at Hanan from 10 yards, but the Cardinal goalie was equal to the task.
Kirshe scored the winner with a shot from the right side of the box that she tucked into the upper left corner with 7:50 left in the second OT.
Williams outshot the Cardinals 19-10 in the game. Hanan finished with nine saves for the Cardinals, and Palcheck recorded five for the Ephs.
