Amherst defeats Women's Soccer 2-0 in Little Three Match

Amherst College junior Emily Hester scored a pair of first half goals to help lift the 18th-ranked Purple & White to a 2-0 shutout win over Little Three rival Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon on Hitchcock Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • In an impressive shooting day for the Purple & White, Amherst put 16 of its 19 shots on frame, including 10 of 11 in the first half.
  • Hester scored what proved to be the game-winner 6:45 into action. Corralling the ball near midfield, Maeve McNamara '19 dribbled down the right sideline before sending a cross towards Hester from just outside the box. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Hester one-touched the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Hester now ranks fourth in the NESCAC in game winning goals with five.
  • Wesleyan had a chance to even the score at the 36 minute mark, but Maya Harlan sent her shot just high of the goal during a breakaway.
  • Hester notched her team-leading eighth goal of the season with under five minutes to play in the opening period. Sending a cross to the feet of Hester, Haley Zwecker '16 tallied her first career assist on the play.
  • Keeping the shutout intact, senior goalkeeper Holly Burwick made one of her best saves of the season in the 43rd minute. Diving to her right fully outstretched, Burwick was able to get her fingertips on Cardinal Beth Alexion's shot taken from point blank range.
  • The second half featured 45 minutes of scoreless play despite 17 shots being taken between the sides.
  • Amherst held a 19-14 advantage in shots, while the Cardinals held the edge in corner opportunities, 6-5.
  • Burwick collected seven saves for the Purple & White in the win. Hester posted a perfect shots-on-goal percentage in the matchup, putting a game-leading five shots on frame.  
  • Wesleyan goalkeeper Rachel Hobert registered 14 saves in the losing effort. A quartet of Cardinals took two shots in the outing.

UP NEXT

  • Amherst travels to Hartford, Conn. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 to take on NESCAC foe Trinity College in its regular season finale. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
  • Wesleyan returns to action on Oct. 28 when they play Connecticut College in a NESCAC conference matchup beginning at 3:15 p.m.
